Adopt-A-Survivor 24/25

Dear New Kadima Graduates and Parents,

You are invited to participate in a very special program available to our eighth grade students – “Adopt-a-Survivor.”  This program was established by Irving Roth z”l, when he was the Director of the Holocaust Resource Center at Temple Judea of Manhasset. Mr. Roth organized a network of Holocaust survivors and 2nd generation survivors to serve as “adoptees” for our eighth grade students.  These connections provide a vital link to the events of the Holocaust in a time when there are fewer survivors living to tell their own stories. This program will be Irving’s legacy. Dinah Kramer, a RSNS congregant will be working with our survivors and 2nd  generation survivors throughout this program.

The experience begins with a dialogue between survivor or 2nd generation survivor and adopter.  Through a series of meetings held at RSNS under my supervision, the students become “surrogate survivors,” committed to learning and re-telling their survivors’ story to the next generation. Students in this program agree to speak about their survivors in the year 2045, the 100th anniversary of the camps’ liberation.

Meetings are held from 6:00-7:30 p.m. about one Wednesday a month. Some meetings are in person at RSNS and some will be held remotely on Zoom (dates noted below). Parents are welcome, but not required to attend, and will take turns providing food for each session we are in person.

The initial sessions will consist of a formal educational piece to provide students with general background information (in person). In subsequent sessions, students will meet the survivors (remote) and will talk with them in detail.  Finally, students will present their survivors’ stories at our synagogue Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Memorial) program in the spring and in the Synagogue School program. A complete schedule of dates is attached below. (All dates are subject to change.)

It is an honor and privilege to invite you to be a part of these survivors’ lives. We hope that you will take advantage of this unique opportunity. Please note that we require a firm commitment from both student and parent, and students must attend all sessions. Please complete enrollment before August 30.

If you have any questions please email or call Rabbi Jodie at RabbiJodie@rsns.org
